Listen. Love. Vote.Song of the Day for September 1st, 2010: “Superstar” by Tegan and Sara
Posted on September 01, 2010Song of the Day: “Superstar” by Tegan and Sara
Album: Under Feet Like Ours
Two Canadian sisters, two guitars, on-stage banter and the ever-present change that possibility that friendly bickering may
suddenly erupt into bloodshed. The pair live on opposite ends of the country but collaborate on all of their music. I recently had the pleasure of seeing them in concert in Toronto over the weekend and they put on a great show despite our far away seats. They started out when they earned the highest score in history at Calgary’s “Garage Warz” competition in 1998 and have toured with big names like Sarah McLachlan and Neil Young.

Song of the Day: “Andy Wolff” by Minus the Bear
Album: Highly Refined Pirates
Minus the Bear is known for their catchy song titles like “Hey, Wanna Throw Up? Get Me Naked” and “Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!”. The group hailing from Seattle, Washington had never played live together before the release of their first EP titled “This is what i know about being Gigantic”. Many people write them off as being a novelty act but their polished, catchy melodies keep listeners coming back.

Song of the Day for August 6, 2010: “Basic Space” – The xx
Posted on August 06, 2010Song of the Day: “Basic Space” by The xx
Album: xx
The xx bring us melancholy indie pop from England in a way that just hasn’t been done. The band contains two girls and two guys which are my very favorite kind of band (Mamas and the Papas anyone?). “Basic Space” is not only a great song to sit on a patio and sip cognac to, but frankly, it makes me think of sex. The entire album by The xx makes me think of sex. Either I’m a pervert or this band has ethereal eeriness down to an art. It’s likely both. Listen to this song and the entire album if you’re looking to get your partner in the mood!

Song of the Day: “Calypso” – Spiderbait
Posted on August 05, 2010Song of the Day: “Calypso” by Spiderbait
Album: Ivy & The Big Apples (1996)
Spiderbait is another one of those great 90s bands that most people have either never heard of, or totally forgot they existed. Today’s song, “Calypso” is my favorite song from this Australian thrash pop band. It’s one of those songs that you think you know where it’s going, but you totally don’t. Another bit of trivia for those who think they may have heard it, this song was featured in the movie 10 Things I Hate About You in the scene where Julia Stiles is reading The Bell Jar. I love that damn movie and this song will make you thrash your head around, but in a more delicate and feminine way.

Song of the Day for August 4, 2010 – “We Are Young” – Mika vs. Redone
Posted on August 04, 2010Song of the Day: We Are Young by Mika vs. Redone
Album: Kick Ass Soundtrack (2010)
If you don’t know who Mika is, you should probably just end your life now. OR… you can listen to this awesome song “We Are Young” by him and some guy named Redone. This song is from the soundtrack for Kick Ass (which on a side note, is an AWESOME friggin’ movie) and is definitely a great first song to hear by Mika, if you weren’t aware of his music before! He’s British, he has curly hair, and I think it’s safe to say that he is the actual reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Mika is theatrical and writes songs that should be performed on Broadway. “We Are Young” is a great combination of his eclectic style mixed with a little edge.

Song of the Day for August 3, 2010: “Fuel” – Ani Difranco
Posted on August 03, 2010Song of the Day: “Fuel” by Ani Difranco
Album: Little Plastic Castle (1998)
Today we are going back in time to an era when Doc Marten’s and flannel ruled the world – the 90s!! Ani Difranco is a feminist folk rock hero and could probably be considered the ultimate hero of third wave feminism. Born in Buffalo, NY, Ani Difranco brought us gritty, angry, and powerful songs that will make you want to burn your bra. “Fuel” is from my favorite album, Little Plastic Castle and while it’s a little more spoken word than song, it will blow your mind! Listen carefully.

Song of the Day for August 2, 2010: “Wake Up” – Arcade Fire
Posted on August 02, 2010Song of the Day: “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire
Album: Funeral (2004)
In honor of last week’s Song of the Week winners Mates of State, on this beautiful Monday afternoon, we will pay homage to another husband and wife duo, The Arcade Fire. Formed in 2003 in Montreal, The Arcade Fire brings orchestral rock and indie theatrics to a whole new level. The song “Wake Up” is from their debut album “Funeral” (released 2004). You may remember hearing this song in the trailer for the movie Where the Wild Things Are and it probably made you want to see the movie just because of that. This song is inspirational, epic and the epitome of indie gold. Props to those who have this on their Funeral Playlist (it’s on mine!).
And the winner is…
Posted on August 02, 2010MATES OF STATE AND “HA HA”!!!
With a total of 19 whopping votes, Mates of State takes the crown!
Thanks to everyone who voted and congratulations to an awesome band!
Next time I go see them live, I will bring them a trophy. I bet they have no idea what a big deal it is to win the first EVER MusicGalore.net Song of the Week!
